Ever wondered what it would be like living in a world where everything is made of gold? Raven Kennedy's Gild takes us into such a world, and believe me, the shine is just as deadly.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 Stars
First of all, can we talk about that cover for a second? It's what caught me in the first place, and there's no letdown with the story that lies within. Raven Kennedy pens a story of wonder and new, where we enter Highbell, the kingdom that turns the life of our heroine into something golden—in its truest sense.
Key Points Summary
The fae have handed over the earth to the humans, and now they control everything, the few powerful ones among their ranks. Highbell is a castle built into the ice-covered mountains, where all is golden: the furniture, the floors, and the clothes, too. The golden cage that she is in imprisons our heroine—rescued, set on a pedestal—King Midas has his precious possession, his Gold-Touched. She would be so safe, it feels in the walls of the castle. She would come to realize, though, that gold cannot save a person from lurking dangers and betrayals yet to come.
Alliances shift as war looms over the kingdom, and trust is broken. Our main character must navigate a world where the very thing that makes her special also makes her a target.
My Thoughts
I loved how Gild reimagines the myth of King Midas. It is not simply a retelling, but bold freshness with elements of romance, fantasy, and a sprinkle of intrigue. Every solid, golden detail in Kennedy's world-building seemed to have been described vividly enough to let me feel that I was right there, in Highbell.
The journey of this protagonist was moving yet empowering. She's not just a passive damsel in distress; she's complex, resilient, and real. Viewing her move through her gilded cage and the tests that are sent her way was seriously a roller-coaster of emotions. And King Midas? Talk about multi-dimensional! He's not your typical fairytale king, which really added to the dynamism of the story.
Why 4.5 Stars?
So, why not a full 5 stars? There was a moment or two where the pacing felt just a bit slow, dragging a bit in the middle. But honestly, it didn't take away too much from my overall enjoyment. The twists and turns were more than enough to keep me hooked, and that climax? Pure gold—pun totally intended!
Final Verdict
Gild is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romantasy with a twist. These are the words that come to mind: magical, absorbing, characters that stay with you way past the last page being turned. If you're looking for a book to simply sweep you away to a world of magic and gold, well, this is certainly it.
